In 2013, Dr. Betty A. Reardon was honored with the Peace Education Prize. As the founding academic director of the Hague Appeal for Peace Global Campaign for Peace Education, Dr. Reardon is one of the most widely recognized peace educators in the world and an author of numerous books, articles, and teachers’ guides on conflict resolution. She has played a tremendous role in advancing the emerging field of peace education, helping to develop the U.N. University for Peace program curriculum while serving as a graduate instructor at the Columbia University Teachers College. She continues to promote peace education internationally by mentoring teachers worldwide, in addition to serving as founding director emeritus of the annual International Institute on Peace Education.
Fuad El-Hibri is the founder and executive chairman of Emergent Biosolutions Inc., as well as founder and chairman of the El-Hibri Foundation. Established with the goal of promoting peace and acceptance across the global population, the non-profit organization sponsors various grants and charitable programs. In 2007, Fuad El-Hibri and the Foundation created the Peace Education Prize to recognize prominent scholars and activists in the field. Carrying a $20,000 cash award, the peace prize is bestowed upon one laureate each year at an invitation-only event in Washington, D.C.

An experienced business administrator and financial services professional, Fuad El-Hibri currently serves as the executive chairman of the board of Emergent BioSolutions Inc., in Rockville, Maryland. Fuad El-Hibri simultaneously chairs the board of directors of the El-Hibri Charitable Foundation, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that promotes civic responsibility and social justice through a variety of educational initiatives.
Fuad El-Hibri and his wife Nancy established the El-Hibri Foundation Peace Education Prize in 2007 to honor scholars, practitioners, and policy makers who have done outstanding work in the field of peace education. Prize winners are chosen on an annual basis by the El-Hibri Peace Education Prize Selection Committee, a group composed of previous prize laureates and other experts in the field of peace education. The Peace Education Prize is awarded on an annual basis with the help of the public resource and service network Nonviolence International. Past winners include Abdul Aziz Said, Mary Elizabeth King, and Chaiwat Satha-Anand. The 2013 Peace Education Prize recipient, Dr. Betty A. Reardon, has served as the founding director emeritus of the International Institute on Peace Education and the founding academic director of the Global Campaign for Peace.
