Every year, the El-Hibri Charitable Foundation announces the recipient of its Peace Education Prize in the fall, around the same time as the International Day of Peace. The International Day of Peace, which takes place annually on September 21, was established by the United Nations in the early eighties as a way to promote and campaign for peace within all countries around the world.
Each year Peace Day also features a larger theme centered on relevant world events. The theme of this year’s International Day of Peace will focus on the idea of togetherness and the promotion of safety, dignity, and respect for individuals forced out of their homes.
Individuals, groups, and organizations can find ideas for observing the holiday on September 21, 2017 on the International Day of Peace website. Suggestions to mark the occasion include yoga sessions, games, the creation of origami paper cranes, gatherings with food and intercultural conversation, and participation in a global moment of silence.
